In the beginning…


Below is the 1936 version of the assault-at-arms team, which was the first time a combined team competed against Alberta. The five men on the right are boxers, the rest matmen. Back row, left to right: Stan Patience, Stan Tallman, Not identified, A. H. Ewan (now Professor of Animal Husbandry here), Dr. Rawson, “English” Heath (later Alberta wrestling coach and recently killed in Korea), Hillyard Harris, and George Ledingham (now Dr.). The University of Saskatchewan “HUSKIE” team of 1953-54 is saluted by the 1983-84 members of the Saskatoon Wrestling Club. Dr. Rawson, the inaugural coach of the Huskies, is kneeling at the bottom right of this photo. Huskie wrestling began in the winter of 1929 and this the winter of 1983-84 celebrates the 55th year of operation while the University of Saskatchewan celebrates its 75th birthday in 1984.
