Saskatoon Wrestling Club History

The University of Saskatchewan Huskie Wrestling Program has been in existence since 1929. During that time, the people involved with the U of S wrestling program have been responsible for the development of amateur wrestling throughout the province for athletes of all ages. The formation of High School wrestling is due to the efforts of Ches Anderson and Howard Nixon, both former coaches of the Huskie wrestling team.

In 1980, The Saskatoon Wrestling Club was started by Dr. Gordon T. Garvie, as an extension of the U of S Huskie Wrestling Program. He included the Pups program for elementary aged wrestlers, the Hounds for high school wrestlers, the Huskies for university wrestlers and the Bulldogs for non-university senior athletes. Since that time, we have become one of the most successful clubs in the country.

The Pups program is the largest and one of the most competitive in the province. At the high school level, now called the Junior Huskies, Saskatoon athletes consistently place in the top three at the National Championships.

The partnership between the Saskatoon Wrestling Club and the U of S Huskie program has produced many top level athletes including World, Commonwealth and Olympic class wrestlers in both the men’s and women’s categories.
